A KwaZulu-Natal community has been left in shock and deep sadness following a tragic incident in which a local businessman, identified as Mbeje, allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide.
According to reports, the incident unfolded after Mbeje arrived at his girlfriend’s residential area with the intention of meeting her. Eyewitnesses say the encounter quickly escalated into a heated argument after the woman allegedly informed him that she wanted to end their relationship.
Witness accounts suggest that the businessman then returned to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and came back moments later. He allegedly opened fire on the woman, who was reportedly shot around 10 times and died at the scene.
The shocking violence left residents in the area traumatised, with many rushing to the scene after hearing gunshots. Some community members described scenes of panic and disbelief as news of the shooting spread quickly through the neighbourhood.
Following the shooting, witnesses allege that Mbeje walked toward the woman’s familyhome, where he fired several shots into the air. He reportedly informed grieving relatives that he had killed their daughter, a moment that further intensified the distress and chaos in the area.
One resident described the aftermath as horrifying, saying people were screaming and struggling to process what had just taken place. According to those present, the situation escalated further when the businessman returned to his vehicle, where a large crowd had already started gathering around the victim’s body.
Moments later, he allegedly turned the firearm on himself and died at the scene.
Police later reportedly discovered a handwritten note inside the vehicle believed to have been written shortly before the incident. The alleged contents of the letter expressed remorse, emotional distress, and regret over what was about to happen.
In the note, he is said to have apologised to both families and reflected on feelings of heartbreak and emotional exhaustion linked to the breakdown of the relationship. He allegedly described struggling to cope with rejection and feeling overwhelmed by emotional pain.
The letter further suggested that he felt torn between his emotions and the actions he was about to take, expressing regret even before carrying them out. He also reportedly asked for forgiveness and acknowledged that his actions would cause irreversible harm and pain to everyone involved.
Community members have since shared differing accounts of the relationship, with some alleging that the businessman had been emotionally distressed in the weeks leading up to the tragedy. Others claimed there had been ongoing tension between the couple, including allegations of infidelity and financial strain, though these claims have not been confirmed by authorities.
Residents also stated that he had reportedly provided financial support to his girlfriend during the course of their relationship, including assistance with family needs and other personal contributions.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many people reflecting on issues such as relationship breakdowns, emotional wellbeing, and the importance of mental health support during personal crises.
