Celebs’ sad Mother’s Day without mum!

Social media was left buzzing with shock earlier this year after singer Danya Devs appeared at his mother’s funeral wearing a black suit with what many people claimed was a snake symbol attached to it.

The images quickly spread across Facebook, TikTok and X, with conspiracy theories exploding online as some users accused celebrities of “sacrificing” their parents for fame and money. The rumours became even louder as more Mzansi stars opened up about losing their mothers in recent years.

Now, as Mother’s Day arrives, several South African celebrities are facing the painful reality of celebrating the special day without the women who raised them.

Danya Devs, whose real name is Sphelele Dunywa, recently buried his mother after she passed away in February. The former Blaq Diamond member described the funeral as “the hardest day” of his life and said he honoured his mum through music and dance because that was how she understood him best.

During the emotional send-off, photos and videos from the funeral circulated online, but instead of focusing only on his grief, many social media users zoomed in on the snake sticker seen on his suit. Some claimed it symbolised secret societies and dark rituals linked to fame.

Others defended the musician, saying people were being insensitive towards a grieving son who had just lost his mother.

The rumours have now resurfaced again after Daily Sun highlighted several Mzansi celebrities who will be spending Mother’s Day without their mums this year.

Among them is media personality Nonhle Thema, who has previously spoken emotionally about the pain of losing her mother and how difficult family life became after her passing.

DJ and producer Prince Kaybee is also among stars remembering their late mothers this Mother’s Day, with fans sending him supportive messages online.

Meanwhile, Bongani Fassie recently paid tribute to his legendary mother Brenda Fassie through music, using his latest project to reflect on grief, healing and family memories.

The deaths of celebrity parents have often sparked dark conspiracy theories online, especially whenever stars become successful shortly before or after a tragedy in their families. However, there has never been proof supporting claims that celebrities sacrifice loved ones for fame.

Many fans have since called for compassion, reminding people that behind the fame are real families dealing with real pain.

For these celebrities, Mother’s Day is no longer just about flowers and gifts, but about memories, heartbreak and trying to heal from the loss of the women who once stood beside them.
