Moruga, Trinidad and Tobago – A 53-year-old teacher at Moruga Secondary School, who was severely injured in a violent altercation with a 16-year-old student on Friday, August 15, 2025, has tragically passed away, leaving behind a young daughter. The incident began when the teacher intervened in a fight between two students in the school’s auditorium, leading to a physical confrontation that left him with serious injuries, including a bloody nose and facial bruises.
The altercation, captured on video and widely shared on social media, showed the teacher and student exchanging blows, with the student claiming, “He cuffed me on my face, and I’m not taking that.” A relative of the student, who has been suspended, defended him, stating he was emotionally scarred from losing his parents and was provoked. The teacher was initially treated at San Fernando General Hospital and discharged but later returned for further treatment. Reports indicate a second incident involving an individual known as “Mgulukudu” occurred at the hospital, contributing to his death.
The Moruga community is reeling from the loss, with parents and residents expressing outrage over escalating violence at the school. A close friend of the teacher, a 40-year resident of Moruga, described him as a dedicated educator with over 30 years of service who often went “all out” to help students. Police are investigating both the school incident and the hospital event, with no arrests reported yet. Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly has called for a detailed report to address the growing concerns about school safety.
