A tragic incident has shaken the Umlazi community following a violent attack that claimed the life of a teenage pupil and left two others seriously injured. The incident, which reportedly unfolded on Friday, 24 April 2026, has raised alarm over the safety of schoolchildren and the growing threat of extortion targeting young people trying to earn a living.

According to preliminary and unconfirmed reports, three pupils from Menzi High School were selling sweets along Maponya Road in the N Section of Umlazi. This practice, while informal, is common in many communities where learners seek small ways to supplement their income or support their families.

Witnesses say the situation took a dark turn when a group of men approached the pupils and allegedly demanded that they pay a “protection fee” in order to continue operating in the area.

It is understood that the pupils refused to comply with the demands. What began as a confrontation quickly escalated into violence. The suspects reportedly became aggressive, and weapons were drawn during the altercation.

In the chaos that followed, one of the pupils, a 19-year-old, sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The sudden loss of such a young life has left both classmates and community members deeply shaken.

The two other pupils, aged 17 and 19, were also injured during the attack. Emergency services responded to the scene, and the injured teenagers were rushed to hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. While their exact condition has not been officially disclosed, it is believed that both suffered serious injuries.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda has confirmed that authorities have opened a case of murder as well as two counts of attempted murder. Law enforcement agencies have since launched a manhunt for the suspects involved in the attack. At this stage, no arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing as police work to gather evidence and identify those responsible.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern within Umlazi and beyond. Community members have expressed anger over the senseless violence and the apparent targeting of schoolchildren. Many residents are calling for stronger police presence and swift action to ensure the suspects are brought to justice. There are also growing concerns about the broader issue of extortion, particularly in areas where informal trading is common.

Parents, educators, and local leaders have voiced fears about the safety of learners who engage in small-scale trading activities. For many pupils, selling items such as sweets is not only a means of earning pocket money but also a necessity driven by economic hardship. The attack has highlighted how vulnerable these young entrepreneurs can be when faced with criminal elements seeking to exploit them.

The family of the deceased pupil has been left devastated by the loss, and condolences continue to pour in from across the community. Support is also being extended to the injured victims and their families during this difficult time.

This remains a developing story, and further updates are expected as more details emerge.
